ROADTRIP - Top Ten Places to Visit in Ilocos
Ilocos is one of the most visited places in North Luzon. With all its tourist attractions and beach resorts, it would probably take more than a long weekend to visit and enjoy all these amazing places. So I did a list of some of the best places in Ilocos that one could visit and that would really make you feel like a true Ilokano.
10. Patapat Viaduct.
The Patapat Viaduct is a long highway stretch that connects Ilocos Norte to Cagayan Valley Region. It is located in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte which is the northern most part of The region.
The best part of this highway, aside from its amazing view of the West Philippine Sea is that there are vendors on the side of the road selling the freshest seafood. You could get lobsters, squids, and fishes at the best price.
9. Bantay Bell Tower
Bantay bell tower is part of the St. Augustine Parish Church in Bantay, Ilocos Sur. The bell tower, not only was used for church activities but also served as watch tower during the times of war. And yes, you could climb up the bell tower to see a stunning perspective of the province.
8. Cape Bojeador
Located in Narpartian Hill in Burgos, Ilocos Norte, This lighthouse served its purpose as guide to galleons making trade with the Philippines during the spanish era. Now, more than just a lighthouse, it is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the province.
7. Juan Luna House
The Juan Luna House is a recreated version of the famed artist's house; as the original one got burned. This shrine features some of Luna's famous artworks as well as some artworks that are not seen in any museums.
6. Malacanang of the North
The rest house of the Marcos clan when Ferdinand Marcos ( who hails from Ilocos himself) was still president of the Philippines. The summer house was also used by the former president whenever he has visitors or foreign dignitaries. Today, the house is more of a museum that showcases some of the portraits and belongings of the political clan.
5. Kapurpurawan Rock Formation
This majestic white rock formation caused by the waves eroding the limestone is a true work of art. Though oftentimes, tourists are not permitted to come near the rocks as it may collapse, it's still a magnificent sight to see. It is located in Burgos, Ilocos Norte.
4. Kabigan Falls
The falls is located in Brgy. Baloi in Pagudpud. The concaved basin that the water falls into might probably where it got its name "kabigan" which means "lalagyan" or "sisidlan"
3. Paoay Church
The distinct architecture of the Church is truly amazing. It was declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
2. Bangui Windmills
The towering giants fans of Ilocos supplies energy for the province. The 70 meter high vestas are magnificent up close. Sustainable energy and amazing tourist attraction in one!
1. Calle Crisologo
Of course, Calle Crisologo in Vigan tops the list. The famed cobblestoned street which still has most of the old houses would really make one feel like a true Ilokano. Most of it are now shops that sell souvenirs and stuff. But this is also where you can get some of the best empanadas and Vigan longganisa. You can't get more Ilokano than that.
Yes, there are more exciting and amazing places in Ilocos that are not on this list. The region is just booming with tourist attractions. Even I had a hard time picking. But if you're in a tight schedule and can visit only some, I suggest that you visit the places seen above. And you'll see how great the region is.
