SILVER SCREEN - Argo Fuck Yourself

I spent the past few days without internet so had time to watch a few movies and write drafts for my next posts. But what I really did was just to watch movies. No draft posts written, but since internet is back, the writing will eventually have to be done. So here is my review for Ben Affleck's critically acclaimed Argo:

Argo is a dramatization of the 1980 joint CIA-Canadian secret operation to extract 6 american diplomats out of revolutionary Iran. in 1979, The American embassy in Tehran was stormed by Iranian revolutionaries. 6 American staff workers escaped by going through a back passage of the building. They hid in the house of Canadian ambassador, Ken Taylor who welcomed them. Tony Mendez, a CIA operative is tasked to extract the 6 Americans out of Iran. Inspired by watching Planet of the Apes, Tony suggests making a fake movie and disguising the 6 refugees as scout locators for their fake movie. Hiring, costume designer John Chambers and movie producer Lester Siegel, they used the script of Argo, a sci-fi movie, similar to Star Wars as their scapegoat.

Ben Affleck really deserves the golden Globe for Best Director. I haven't seen all of the movies who vied for this prize but he did pretty amazing with Argo. With movies that are based on true to life stories, one would usually think, it would be easier to tell since the story is already there. It's a true event, you wouldn't need to do more with it. But Ben Affleck did different. It was like a fresh new take on an old story.

What I also like was that the movie has substance. Though the story was short, it really had something that made me think, feel nervous, scared and amazed all at the same time. A damn good movie about a fake movie. This movie is a definite must see. Yes, it was shown here last October but you cans till get it when they release the DVD.
