CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT - Rila Fukushima: Fashionably Bad Ass

Our Celebrity spotlight shines on a supermodel who has ventured into acting. It's not uncommon for them to do this since most models appear on music videos (think Claudia Schiffer in Billy Joel's Uptown Girl) Some even had gone into hosting and acting jobs.  So without further ado, I give you Rila Fukushima.

With her towering frame of 5 feet 8 inches, Rila would definitely stand out in a crowd. She initially wanted to be a modelling agent but she was persuaded to be a model. She has then modeled for few commercials and and editorial clients in Japan. She also modeled for the Spring/Summer Campaign of Dolce and Gabbana in 2004.

Rila Fukushima also appeared in music videos such as Lenny Kravitz's Why Are We Runnin' and Ben Taylor's Wicked Way. She also starred in World's End Sialagogue which was directed by Bruno Levy.

Rila's first dramatic role was in Kevin Foong's short story Karma: A Very Twisted Love Story with japanese actor Micah Kaneko.

This time, Rila stars in The Wolverine as Yukio, a Japanese martial artist who serves the Yashida Clan. She is the one who finds Logan and brings him to Japan. In the original comic books, Yukio is an X-men ally. Yukio become friends with Logan in the movie and helps him protect Mariko who is like her sister and defeat Viper and the Silver Samurai.

Rila Fukushima is not the first model who has ventured into action films. Before becoming the zombie-slashing Alice in Resident Evil, Mila Jovovich was also a supermodel. Rila isn't even the first model who turned into a mutant. Rebecca Romijn was a fashion model too before shape shifting into the blue skinned Mystique. Though Yukio was not a mutant in the original story, nor was it clarified in the movie, Yukio was said to have visions of the future. Partnering her swift karate chops and sword slashing moves with her flaming red hair and knee high leather boots, Rila Fukushima makes Yukio a pretty fashionable bad ass.

    1. Claudia Schiffer was the leading lady in the music video of Billy Joel's Uptown Girl. I was making her an example of how models shift from modelling to acting and other media appearances.
