SILVER SCREEN - Despicable As It Can Be

In 2010, the world was introduced to a new kind of villain. Gru, whose desire to be the world's number one villain was fulfilled when he successfully stole the moon. However his evil heart was melted when three little girls, Margo, Edith, and the unicorn loving Agnes, came to live with her. Despicable Me was a blockbuster hit! Everything about it became as iconic as a animated movie could be; from Gru's pointy nose, Agnes' unicorn song, and the minions! Despicable Me was really a well loved success. So fans were delighted when news of a sequel  broke through around late 2011. Though it will be two more years then, everyone was excited to see it. Even me! Finally, it's here in the Philippines and last night, I watched it together with my friends. Here is what I thought about it:

Despicable Me 2

Directed by:
Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud

Starring:
Steve Carell, Kristin Wiig, Benjamin Bratt, Russel Brand, Miranda Cosgrove

Despicable Me 2 opens up on that arctic circle where an entire laboratory was taken by a huge magnet. Then to Gru's house where Gru is now a devoted father to the three girls. giving up his quest for world domination to make jams and jellies. However, he is being recruited by a top secret organization to find out who stole the laboratory in the arctic circle which studies a rare chemical known as PX-41 which can create a new breed of evil. Gru is torn between his efforts to be a role model to his girls or to once more be in the scene where he uses weapons, devices and other gadgets, a scene he has known all his life.

I won't say anything else, since I've pretty much told  the main plot. but as with every movie, there are twists. One, the trailers have shown the minions being kidnapped, who was doing it? Two, the red haired girl who we saw tazed Gru in the trailer. is she another villain? And three, who stole the giant laboratory? Well, you have to watch the movie to find out.

One thing I like the most about this movie is Steve Carell. He is a comic genius. Though his voice is easily recognizable but you could really feel his acting even just through his voice. Also, when he appeared on the Ellen show dressed as Gru, he really got it perfectly!

Another thing I liked about the movie is Agnes. Her cuteness and consistent adoration for unicorns and Gru is so adorable, which really makes her a lovable character. Everyone adored Agnes in the first movie and I'm sure everyone will still do in this one.

Though there are some thing I was not quite ecstatic about in this movie. One, the villain is not as difficult to defeat. In the first movie, Vector alone  was successful in stealing the moon and the girls from Gru. But the villain in this movie needed extra help from someone (I will not say who) coherently evil. another thing I didn't like is the lack of a backbone for some of the plots. There are parts of the story which didn't really have a background on why it was part of the movie and some parts were just placed there without giving enough connection to the whole plot.

The saving grace of this movie are the minions. They are the cutest things ever! Their babble is just hilarious and I dare anyone not to laugh when they start speaking. Plus, the marketing that they did for this movie (i.e. Mcdonald's sold out happy meals) really helped in making the minions stars of the movie.

All in all, Despicable Me 2 is a fun movie. I was laughing the entire time. Though, not as great as the first one, I'm sure Despicable Me 2 will still be hit.
