SILVERSCREEN - Caught Fire

First, I want to thank Nuffnang Philippines and PLDT Fibr for giving away tickets to the special screening of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Anyway, Catching Fire might just be the biggest movie this fall. The first installment was a box office success and catapulted Jennifer Lawrence into stardom. Now with the much awaited second part, things definitely are ablaze. Here is what I thought about the movie:

In the second part of the series, Katniss Everdeen is living in the Victor's Village together with her family. Her act to save her and Peeta's life in last year's games were seen by the other districts as an act of rebellion prompting President Snow to pay Katniss a visit and threaten her family. Katniss tries to obey Snow's orders but the people already see her as a beacon of hope. President Snow then issues a game change in the Quarter Quell, the 75th year of the Hunger Games. The Tributes shall come from the district's pool of victors. The other victors are mad because they see this as the capitol controlling even them who already survived their plots.

There's more to it but that's basically the reason why we see Katniss and Peeta again in the arena and it kind of snow balls after that.

When I reviewed Catching Fire (the book) I said I was not as hungry for it as the first book. In the second book, Katniss was shown to be just tired from all the things the capitol wants and all she wants was to be free from it. I didn't like how the game changed her; her spunk, her attitude, her bravery. All that was gone in the book. The movie did not differ as much but I liked the movie better since it really made you feel the dark undertone of the Games and that it really messes you up. It kind of explained or showed why Katniss lost a bit of her spark.

Another thing I liked about the movie is how it stayed true to the story of the book, same way it did for the first movie. It's a great thing for movies that are adaptations of a book to reach out to the authors for authenticity and sincerity to the story.

One thing to watch out for in this movie is Katniss' costumes (The ember dress worn in the parade and the wedding gown turned mockingjay dress) We've seen it in trailers and sneak peeks but they really gave emphasis on her costumes this time. It's more haute couture than the last movie and costume are more dramatic.

Another thing to watch out for is Jennifer Lawrence's face as Jenna Malone (Johanna Mason) undresses in front of her and Peeta to intimidate them. Shows how great Jennifer Lawrence is as an actress.

All in all, Catching Fire was a great movie but not as great as the first one. The same way, the second book was not as great as the first. But hey, the story of Catching Fire was really just an intermediate for the finale.

  1. First one was just a bit better, but this one still has its moments that will make you happy to see what happens when a book-to-movie adaptation is done right. Nice review Francis.

    1. Yes. the movie has those moments - results of having the author being involved in the movie. Thanks :)
