SILVERSCREEN - 8 Reasons Why You Should Call Me By Your Name

"Call me by your name, and I'll call you by mine"

It's been so long since I wrote a movie review. And now I am back again to share my thoughts about a certain film.

Call Me By Your Name stars Armie Hammer (The Lone Ranger, The Man from U.N.C.L.E, The Social Network) as Oliver, and Timothee Chalamet (Interstellar, Lady Bird) as Elio. Set in 1980s Italy, it tells the story of a young, talented and smart boy who is just finding his place in the world and a young man, who finds love he didn't expect. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, the film debut last November 2017 at the Sundance Film Festival.

It's such a beautiful story and here are my top 8 reasons why you should watch Call Me By Your Name:

8. It was based on an award winning book
Now, this film is an adaptation of a 2007 novel of the same title, written by Andre Aciman. The novel won the Gay Fiction category in the 20th Lambda Literary Awards. The Lambda Literary Awards are awarded yearly by the U.S.-based Lambda Literary Foundation to published works which celebrate or explore LGBT themes.

7. It has great soundtrack.
With a soundtrack composing of various pop and classical music, the movie scoring would definitely bring you to a different atmosphere. One of my favorites from the soundtrack is Sufjan Stevens' Mystery of Love.

6. It has great scenery.
Shot in different locations in the Lombardi region of Italy such as Moscazzano, Crema, Parco Regionale del Serio, among others, it was a picturesque view. It was such a delight to watch and it's like being in Italy and experiencing all of its beauty.

5. Armie Hammer is, as always, amazing.
From playing Prince Charming in Mirror Mirror,  to twins in The Social Network. From riding horses as The masked Lone Ranger, to stopping terrorists in The Man from U.N.C.L.E, this guy has done it. His performance in this movie is so endearing, and genuine. Hammer also received a nomination nod from the Golden Globes for Best Supporting Actor as Oliver.

4. Timothee Chalamet is a revelation.

Timothee Chalamet played the young, naive, but smart and very talented Elio. And he did with so much power and grace. He even learned how to play the piano, play the guitar and speak Italian for this role. That is just testament to the devotion and commitment that he has for this movie. Chalamet has also won a number of acting awards such as Best Actor and Breakthrough Performer from the Chicago Film Critics Association, Breakthrough Actor from the Gotham Independent Film Awards, Best Actor and Breakthrough Performer from the New York Film Critics Circle and New York Film Critics Online to name a few. On top of all other nominations including The Critics' Choice Movie Awards and the Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor. All as playing Elio. Wow!

3. It is a critically acclaimed movie.
Aside from its award winning actors, the movie itself is critically acclaimed. Call Me By Your Name has won grand prize at the Cheries-Cheris Festival, The NOS Audience Award from the Lisbon & Estoril Film Festival. It also led the Independent Spirit Awards with 6 nominations including Best Feature, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Male Lead, Best Supporting Male and Best Editing.
The movie has also received nomination from the Critics' Choice Awards and was also nominated in The Golden Globe Awards for Best Motion Picture - Drama.

2. It's compelling and endearing.
The theme of the movie is love. And it tells very straightforward of the character's experience. No twists, no cliffhangers, no pretentious story lines. It was a narrative and it was beautifully told. It was so compelling, one would be foolish to not root for the two main characters. The story was so endearing, you'd fall in love with the love story of Elio and Oliver.

1. It's a heart breaking love story.

Ok, major spoiler alert. Elio and Oliver's story is heart breaking. And it's a representation of a reality of those who are in the kind of relationship that they were in. Though, their story is beautiful. It was very heart tugging. Plus the acting of Chalamet and Hammer, combined with the soundtrack, the scenic backdrop, gives the movie a different emotional depth that we rarely see in movies today.

Call me By Your Name will have its Philippine Screening at the end of the January 2018. Be sure to watch this film!
